Social networks will get bigger but more curated

Posted in social with tags , , on April 26, 2011 by Joanna Lyall

Over the last few weeks I have been using Path to share aspects of my life with smaller groups of friends within my Facebook network.  The iPhone Path app is very simple to use and allows you to capture images/video/comment about where you are and what you are doing.  Path refer to these posts as ‘moments’ which is a lovely idea for sharing little bits of life with friends.  The concept of being able to curate what you share with each individual in your social network allows us to make more sense of these giant ‘friends’ groups that we have all been building over the last few years.  Our walls are overloaded with updates from people and brands that we probably don’t care that much about and amongst all the irrelevant diatribe we might be missing more important words from people we do care about.  Whilst I can see a role for global social network platforms like Facebook for years to come, I do think we will see more curation and control being taken by consumers over what they share and to whom they share it with and technology solutions like Path will enable us to do this. www.path.com

The iPad

As with most Apple products this looks beautiful.  As I watched the film this morning about what it can do I could imagine it in my life.  If you have never looked at your photos on an apple screen before then do it now because they look beautiful, the iPad is perfect for sharing your holiday or wedding photos with friends.  So far I see it as more of a sit back and enjoy product than an active get in there and do stuf product.  i.e. watch films, read mags, read a book, read the news, watch telly and view photos.  I can see it in my lounge, kitchen and holiday but I can’t see it in my handbag everday.  Here’s the but, the price point is good but I don’t want another mobile account to pay for every month, I would just want to use it in wifi zones is that not possible?

An idea I’d love share

The Big Lunch from mastercard looked pretty succesful fromwhere I was standing.  I saw a street near my home turned into a village fete for the day.  All the neighbours where out with their kids actually talking to each other, in London this is quite unusal behaviour.  I think I may even have had a bit of street envy, next year my street will be getting involved….  This idea was great because it activated people into changing their behaviour and doing something different, and why?  because a brand recognised a need in culture for people to connect more with each other and gave them the tools to make it happen.

From an advertising POV I am wondering what they will do next, how will the content be shared and the campaign made bigger?  Quotes of 2 million people being involved have been suggested, how will Mastercard  ensure those people remain advocates….
